How Can Counselling Help?

At some point in our lives, most people face disappointment, loss or Life challenges. Many people experience feeling overwhelmed by these difficulties. These issues can often seem insurmountable and too big to deal with. Often people are unsure what to do about these feelings or even where to start. This is where Counselling and Psychotherapy can help. A trained Counsellor can help identify the issues and support you to work through them, helping you find solutions and cope with the thoughts, feelings and behaviours, that are causing the porblems.
When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrefied, or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity then understanding is called for.The gentle and sensitive companionship of an emphatic stance . . . provides illumination and healing. In such situations, deep understanding is, I believe is the most precious gift one can give another.
Carl Rogers

"A person is a fluid process, not a fixed and static entity; a flowing river of change, not a block of solid material; a continually changing constellation of potentialities, not a fixed quantity of traits."

As long as I can remember, I have been interested in health and supporting people to reach their potential. My earliest interests were with martial arts, mindfulness and eastern approach to health. This lead me to study Shiatsu & holistic Health. My Martial Arts training included mindfulness, sitting and moving meditation. I have also found the outdoors, nature, green and blue spaces to be healing and good for positive mental health. As a result, I enjoy walking in nature, surfing, kayaking, and sea swimming. I also teach martial arts including varoius mindfulness practices. In a professional capacity, I have worked for over 25 years with young people and their families, and developed my interest in Counselling & Psychotherapy, as a result of this work and initial my training in meditation.
Following this meditation training with the Scottish Mediation Bureau, Tallaght Mediation Bureau and Real justice, UK, I studied Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy, graduating with an Honours Degree in 2017. I then worked as a Counsellor at the Village Counselling Centre in Tallaght, Walkinstown Greenhills Resource Centre and also in private practice. Between 2017 and 2020, I was a Teaching Assistant at the Institute of Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP) College, helping student Counsellors/Psychotherapists, with their skills training. I also work as a Therapist with Archways, Centre for Excellence for Child and Family, in Clondalkin. I am a fully accredited member of the Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (IACP).
My Psychotherapy training was integrative, which means that I am trained to intergrate several different therapeutic methods. These include Person-Centred Therapy, Choice Therapy, Group Therapy, Addiction, Transactional Analysis, Motivational Interviewing & working with addiction, Relationship Counselling and Pluralism. I have also taken numerous Continued Professional Development courses, including Hypnotherapy and Mind Coaching, Functional Family Therapy, RAID Training for interupting extreme behaviour, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Children & Adolesocents, Trauma Informed Therapy, Internal Family Systems & Parts Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, CBT for weight management, Health and Social Care, Lifestyle Medecine, Meditation, SAOR (Screening and Brief Intervention Training for problem Alcohol use), Storm and Assist (Suicide intervention training), , Recovery in Mental Health, Mindfulness for Therapeutic use and others.

Length and Frequency of Service:

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes long. It is recommended that you commit to a maximum of six sessions and that you would attend weekly. It is my experience that people who get the most out of counselling attend regularly, particularly in the initial stages.

Frequently asked questions:
Q. What if I don't know what to talk about or where to start?
A. Counsellors are trained to help clients discover what is most the most important to them. They have many techniques to help make this easier. It is common for people to think "What will I talk about" or "Where will I start?" But once they attend, they find that there is a lot to talk about, and they wonder how the time went so quickly.
Q. I just feel bad, but I'm not sure if counselling will help?
A. Counselling often helps you to identify the problems and solutions. By attending counselling and talk about you, you are no longer alone. Identifying the problem can help externalise it, reduces stress, and provide clarity and a pathway to choices or solutions.
Q. If I'm not sure about counselling, can I discuss this with a Counsellor before attending?
A. Yes. I encourage people to contact me and ask questions if they have any worries, concern or need anything clarified. There is no obligation to attend, if after discussing with the Counsellor, you feel it is not for you. Hopefully, I can help you make a decision that is best for you and your needs.
